Zion National Park

Probably you may have heard not so much about Zion National Park. It's a little bit overshadowed by other National parks nearby, it's bigger, more renowned neighbor, the Grand Canyon which is open and wide and turns in a show for you in the changing light.

And it may appear slightly decorous close to the fancy smaller neighbor of Zion National Park. It's the Bryce Canyon National Park where it seems hoodoos dancing and playing with you and invite you in.

Whenever you first come to Zion National Park, you may even say, "How can I actually see this park?" This is a place of soaring, brooding walls. It's a park of hidden treasures.

As a kid exploring Zion National Park, what I keep in mind is the winding road into the park, those soaring cliffs close to the lodge, and walking underneath a gigantic overhanging rock I was worried would fall on me. I guess that rock is pretty stable because as a grownup, I walked thereunder same rock, and my favorite new memory is a day hike in The Narrows.

Inside the park there is really no place to drive around. Scenic routes lead into the park and stop at the Virgin River. The river cuts through it, going on to carve the canyon.

On the overcrowded summertime months, no private vehicles are allowed into the heart of Zion Canyon. Free shuttle buses run regularly to popular stops. Besides shuttles run from the town of Springdale close to the park. It's comfortable and easy to transfer to the park shuttle.

If you come in the Zion National Park on the Zion-Mt. Carmel Highway, you will get going your scenic drive as you go into the park. This winding road features sweeping sights of the canyon, the Great Arch of Zion, and the Checkerboard Mesa. You'll also pass across the Zion-Mt Carmel Tunnel. You should know that this road has restrictions for oversized vehicles. It is small and curving. If your RV is too big, you may be re-directed or you must have an escort to drive this road. For the escort you have to pay an extra fee of about $15.

To appreciate Zion you have to do a little walking. A short but steep hike will take you to Weeping Rock. You can take the shuttle to the Temple of Sinawava stop. For short and comfortable walking, take the mile-long paved trail up the river to the beginning of a slot canyon.

If you want to experience a classic Zion National park hike, this is where you will start the hike through the Zion Narrows. This is a fun, exciting, impressive hike, but the Park Service emphasizes that it's not to be taken lightly. There is no trail per se, the Virgin River is the trail. You will be walking in the river more than half of the time.

The ongoing can be strong, it threatens to sweep you off your feet in places. The water is cold, and you'll be in shade as the walls of the canyon close to only 20-30 feet at times and sheer vertical walls soar above you.

Check with the Visitor Center for hints and information that will help you decide if you want to make this hike. You don't need a back country permit if you're just going part way up the slot canyon and back same day, but you must check the weather condition. Flash floods are possible all of the time. However, if weather conditions are right, and you are prepared well, this is a hiking experience you will never forget.

Hike up to Angel's Landing for a different sight over part of the park. Switchbacks climb up, and a small rocky ridge takes you to the outlook, so it's not for any people afraid of heights.

For the more adventuresome, however, there is rock climbing too. Inside the Zion National Park there is the Zion Lodge and in the town of Springdale you'll find plenty of lodging.

By walking and exploring, you will find that Zion National Park welcomes you and rewards your walkings with the hidden treasures you didn't expect when you first saw that soaring rock wall as you took in.
