The Grand Canyon Skywalk
|
If you would like to walk over the Grand Canyon, a great option to get a once-in-a-lifetime memory is to walk over the Grand Canyon Skywalk, a glass-bottomed bridge in a horseshoe shape. The most developed area at Grand Canyon National Park is the South Rim. It is the place where most of the visitors have usually gone. The South Rim is open all over the year, though some facilities may be closed in wintertime. Your second choice is the North Rim. It has fewer tourists and isn't opened to vacationers in the wintertime. The Grand Canyon West is the third point of access to the canyon. At this place is located the Grand Canyon Skywalk, quite far from the other entrances. The land here belongs to the Hualapai Nation Indian Tribe. We first saw pictures of the proposed bridge on the net, we thought it was a hoax, however it is absolutely real. It has been built, and it is operating. This glass-bottomed bridge is well publicized. It sweeps out 70 feet (20 meters) over the canyon in a horseshoe form. The bridge is suspended about 4,000 feet (1,220 meters) above the Colorado River. Besides hiking into the Grand Canyon or experiencing a Grand Canyon Mule Trip walking over the edge of the Grand Canyon by visiting the Grand Canyon Skywalk is a once-in-a-lifetime memory. You will need a proper planning for this because it is far away from the South Rim. Explore Great Adventures

It's only 120 miles (190 km) from Las Vegas, but 242 miles (390 km) from the South Rim Visitor's Center. It's too far for a quick visit from there. However numerous tour operators out of Las Vegas are offering day tours to the Grand Canyon Skywalk. If you prefer to drive yourself, the best option is a high-clearance SUV or a 4-wheel drive automobile because the last 18 miles (29 km) to the Skywalk are on bumpy and unpaved road. To drive to there It takes about 2 1/2 hours from Las Vegas. Of course. it's also possible to make it in a smaller car, merely it is pretty rough. If you plan to rent a car, we wouldn't advise taking that sedan on this road. It is also not suitable for Recreational Vehicles (RVs). If you are going to there taking a small car or an RV, at the Welcome Center there is a "Park and Ride" shuttle service available. The fee for this shuttle is about $10 (7.5 Euros). You must buy a visitation permit and a bundle of activities by the Hualapai to go through the Skywalk. The fee is in addition to one of the packages. The minimum cost to visit to visit the Skywalk is about $70 (about 50 Euros). Only 120 people are allowed on the Skywalk at any one time. Access is first in, first out unless you have a reservation. They will provide you with shoe covers which help keep you from slipping and also keep your shoes from scratching the glass. There is one thing you should know. Aside from the expensive cost of the tours there are no personal cameras allowed on the bridge. It's a precaution in case you drop your camera and damage the glass. Women's handbags are also checked into lockers. Whenever you would like to walk over the Grand Canyon, visit the Grand Canyon Skywalk. Now you are just prepared and know what to expect. |
